Media bias against a murdered Muslim woman

On July 1st 2009, Marwa El Sherbini, an Egyptian Muslim academic researcher wearing Hijab who lived in Germany, was 18 times stabbed in to death inside a courtroom in the city of Dresden in Germany. The incident was in front of her 3 year old son. Once her husband tried to save her, he was shot by German court officials and he was seriously hurt.

The man once called her terrorist while she was at a playground wearing HIjab and she sued him for racist remark. In the court, the man wielded knife and stabbed her in to death 18 times.
It was too late once the story has come out in media. It was difficult even to find about it from search engines, because the incident was not known to media. The incident shows that fanatic anti-Islamism dominate on western culture day by day, instead of secularism that West quite often used to give extreme but artificial significance.

Is secularism just a matter of name sake? The incident has occurred in a secular western country, and, yet there was so little coverage among the so called secular, free, and democratic western media. Same time, Media gave good converge on Neda, a woman who was killed in Iran during a poll watch, and blamed Iranian government.

Whether Media is biased or not would be more obvious from this incident. West media, quite often, talk about women freedom and exaggerate on Muslim women related issues, but it has zero responses while a Muslim woman was so brutally attacked by one in the court who has abused her earlier calling her ‘terrorist’. She or he is terrorist? The incident, finally, proved who exact terrorist is.

Media forgot their usual terms of ‘women harassment, women freedom, women rights etc, It is very obvious, even while west talks about religious terrorism, a deep and fanatic terrorist ‘mind’ is being generated among westerners and it soon turn to be great challenges more dangerous than terrorism. Yes, terrorism is most dangerous on modern life, and it must be discouraged with all our efforts, but what about the one we see now from Germany? Is that just an incident as seen in other cases? A ‘woman’ is killed by a man, yet, there were neither human rights voices nor feminist noises. May be because, the dead was a Muslim. Imagine, the same is happened in a Muslim country to a woman from west?! Media will be so active and have strong voices! Media is, of course, biased against the Muslim woman who was brutally killed inside a court by a fanatic western.

The incident shows west’s anger to Islamic culture. West is not open minded to other’s culture. It is not ready to accept freedom of expression, freedom of religion and freedom of cultures, even while they artificially create scenes. Recently, France president Sarkozy raised an issue of Hijab, saying that it is not Islamic. (See Islam Explored article on Sarkozy against wearing Hijab) All these show that West fear Islam culture. They fear Islam and they are not ready to accept Islam within their territory. Full body garment is not acceptable to West (France) territory which means; Islamic culture is not acceptable, and more specifically Islam itself is not acceptable. Then what about so called freedom of expression and freedom of preaches? Why do west fear Islam and its culture? West and its media pretends as not understanding one basic matter- Whatever is one’s culture, that is his freedom.
Below is an excerpt from www.aljazeera.com
“While Europe preaches freedom of expression and the need to accept otherness, and while Europe preaches about the dangers of racism and sectarianism in third world countries, and while Europe warns about hate speech and anti-Semitism, we see race-driven crime, prejudice, and hate speech gaining both legitimacy and power in France, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Denmark and other democracies in the old continent. Race-driven crimes are constantly presented as exceptions within a tolerant society. However, the recurrence of exceptions puts in question their exceptional nature.

The absence of Marwa’s story from the mainstream media and the failure to start a debate about the immediate dangers of present European anti-Muslim racism shows the depth of the problem and draws us to expect a gloomy future for Muslims in Europe. Muslims like Neda only get to the news if their story serves the dominant narrative that presents Islam as the primary threat to freedom, while Muslims like Marwa who expose the pervasive racism of the West and challenge the existing stereotypes fail to get their story told”.
